Smaro is a Licensed Master of Social Work and a compassionate guide for those navigating life’s most profound transitions. Smaro’s approach to psychotherapy is rooted in her academic background in philosophy, religious studies, and anthropology, which have shaped her understanding of human suffering, healing, and resilience. With a BA in Philosophy from SUNY New Paltz, and minors in Religious Studies and Ancient World History, Smaro brings a unique perspective to her work, viewing therapy as a collaborative process of meaning-making. She believes that the therapeutic encounter
serves as a container in which clients can explore and reconstruct their personal narratives, drawing on their inner strengths to create new meaning and grow.
Smaro received her graduate degree from Fordham University with the intention of working in the realms of grief, death, and dying. She formerly served as a Medical Social Worker at Hudson Valley Hospice, where she supported individuals and families through the complex emotional terrain of terminal illness and death. This role has reinforced her belief in the profound power of presence, empathetic listening, and holding space for the full range of human experiences. Smaro has a profound respect for the Mystery and Beauty of reality, existence, and the interconnectedness of all things.
In addition to her clinical work, Smaro has an ongoing commitment to spiritual inquiry and healing practices. She has been a Reiki therapist since 2018, bringing energy work into her practice to support clients in accessing deep levels of relaxation, release, and restoration. Her involvement in various cross-cultural ceremonies and Indigenous rights advocacy further informs her understanding of cultural healing practices and the importance of honoring diverse spiritual traditions in the therapeutic space. With a deep commitment to trauma-informed, spiritually grounded care, Smaro creates a safe, nurturing space where clients can explore challenges and integrate growth with support, compassion, and authenticity. By utilizing trauma-informed approaches with spiritual practices, Smaro aims to empower clients to heal, grow, and find meaning in their journey.
